The " Loin" roars !!!
The Lion is straining to come
back with a roar. And how! According to the latest news, the Central Government
is deliberating on making the Lion the national animal of India, displacing the
tiger which has held this status since 1971. The purported reason behind this
latest charade is not known, but it seems to have originated from a Rajya Sabha
MP, Mr. Parimal Nathwani, who feels that the king of the jungle deserves this
elevation.
Not surprisingly, the wildlife
experts and activists are outraged. For starters, the lion is found in only one
state of India, NaMo’s Gujarat, whereas the tiger is found widely across the
country, from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, and Assam to Madhya Pradesh, except in
Gujarat, from where they disappeared in 2001. Not surprisingly, Na Mo wants to extend
this trend to the rest of the country. What’s good for Gujarat has got to be
good for the rest of the country. Thus displacing other important issues, such
as the failure of wildlife conservation efforts in several states, and
widespread poaching activities.
A tongue- in –cheek look at some
of the implications, and some of the expected sequelae of this latest brainchild of NaMo:
1. An
official ordinance replacing all names prefixed or suffixed with “Tiger” to be replaced
with “ Lion.” So, Tiger Pataudi becomes
Lion Pataudi and Tiger Memon becomes Lion Memon.
2. Renaming
of the Gir Lion as Royal Gujarat Lion on the lines of the Royal Bengal Tiger.
3. Places
also get renamed. So , “ Tiger Hill” in Darjeeling,
the site of many a majestic sunrise and sunset, becomes “ Lion Hill” .
4. Tiger
Woods to be officially covered as Lion Woods in the media, whenever he is
playing in India.
5. Tiger
Balm ( the cure of many a headache) becomes Lion Balm
Et cetera, et cetera.
Ajit would chuckle in his grave,
appreciating the foresight which made him declare” saraa shahar mujhe loin ke
naam se jaanta hai” , and not as “ tiger
ke naam se jaanta hai.”
What next , NaMo? Declaration of Dhokla and Aam Ras,
as the national dish and beverage of India? And Gujarat as the “mother of all states”? Way
to go ! Keep it up !
Haha.... it's a hilarious take, but I do really wonder what makes them think to dethrone the tiger!
